Background:
Urban Legacies II: Another New Babylon took Constant Nieuwenhuys’ Situationist theory as the starting point for exploring how temporary, informal and unplanned interventions by artists and creative practitioners are contributing to urban regeneration. The conference was attended by public and private property owners, urban planners, architects, artists and those with an interest in urban regeneration.

As with the original Urban Legacies conference in 2004, there were two strands to the event:

The Conference:
A series of talks and panel debates over two days will draw on extraordinary experiences from cities across the world, including Sao Paulo, Phoenix, Beirut, Tallinn and Kinshasa. Contributors include artists, architects, academics and curators who are leading new thinking on the role of art in transforming the public realm.

Commissions:
In parallel, a number of commissions by young and acclaimed artists will respond to the central theme of the conference. These included artworks by Veronika Valk, Antony Shapland, Marjetica Portc and a new piece of music by composer Morgan Hayes, which was performed by the Music Theatre Wales Ensemble at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay on 06 October 2006. An exhibition was also held at CBAT Gallery alongside the conference. Further information about this can be found in the CBAT Gallery section of this website.
