Background:
Jennie Savage’s STAR Radio has created a diverse archive about the STAR area of Cardiff. STAR stands for Splott, Tremorfa, Adamsdown and Roath, four distinct post-industrial inner Cardiff suburbs. Artist Jennie Savage and a team of radio technicians were based in a shop on Clifton Street in the heart of the area for 6 months. During this time people who lived and worked in the area were invited to stop by, have a cup of tea and discuss their ideas for radio programmes. Many people then went on to develop and record a project, take part in STAR events and workshops or devise and present their own live programme. The responses to this proposition were diverse ranging from radio plays to documentaries, music, interviews and audio walks. 16 other artists were also invited to come to the area and respond to it from the position of their own practice. Each artist approached the project in uniquely interesting ways and presented programmes that represent all aspects of the area ranging from the political to the personal.

STAR Radio broadcasted its programmes 22-29 October from its base on Clifton Street to homes within the STAR region and was available to listen and download from the project website. Many of the programmes, rather than commanding your full attention, are effective as background and are a catalyst for contemplation. Some programmes are interactive and invite you to go out with your ipod or MP3 player and take a guided tour, whilst other programmes are documentation of live music or participatory events.

All programmes created and broadcast are now archived within specific categories relevant to the STAR post-industrial communities and are available to listen to or download from the project website at www.starradio.org.uk.

Following a successful exhibition of the project archives at the National Museum Cardiff, Jennie Savage’s STAR Radio artist book will be launched in May 2006.
