Title:
Black Box
Date:
4th - 6th October
Artist:
Veronika Valk
Location:
Former Nat West Bank in Cardiff
Bay
Background:
Born in Tallinn, architect and
artist Veronika Valk has made an impact on the Estonian cultural landscape that
belies her youth. A one half of the in-demand architecture and events duo ZiZi & YoYo,
she has won commissions for public and pri- vate buildings, interiors and landscapes.
In her work, she investigates the aspirations of buildings, spaces and cities
and
the people inhabiting and using them.
For Urban Legacies, Valk proposed over 20 ideas compiled in an ‘urban self
help guide on how to reconstruct your city in 30 days.’ One of those proposals,
a temporary infl atable hotel, has been installed in the former Nat West Bank
in Cardiff Bay. Built from basic materials and infl ated by simple desk fans,
this ‘Black
Box Hotel’ will also host discussion, a cinema, video art, performances
and work by artists from Wales and Estonia.
Commission:
This project is part of Urban Legacies: Another New Babylon, a series of temporary public art projects commissioned by
CBAT, the arts & regeneration agency, Cardiff.
