Title:
West Close Square
Date:
1993
Artist:
Nina Edge, David Mackie & The Green youth Connection
Location:
West Close Square, Butetown
Background:
Collaborations between artists, community groups and schools can enable residents to become involved in the process of shaping new neighbourhoods. Teenage girls from The Green Youth Connection – Ruth Blades, Michelle Campbell, Leanne Griffith and Saffron-Emma Jenkins – initiated this scheme in 1991 and worked with two Cardiff artists to design and make a distinctive meeting lace for residents of all ages
Commission:
Supported by South Glamorgan County Council and Cardiff Bay Arts Trust, the scheme’s partners encouraged the creative and practical involvement of community members at every stage. West Close residents brought images and ideas to this project from their own family backgrounds and histories. The resulting square was partly inspired by the Birmingham Peace Garden. It includes circular brickwork seating, carved terracotta relief panels reflecting Butetown’s past, symbols of hope for its future and a safe garden for children’s play
