Title:
We Live Between Water & Sky (Wednesfield
Way Arch)
Date:
2004
Artist:
Richard Harris
Location:
The Deans Road, Wolverhampton
Background:
The Deans Road site is the gateway
to Wednesfield and as such forms the transitory link between Wednesfield and
Wolverhampton. Current and former transit routes converge on this site including
the Wyrley and Essington canal, one operational and one disused railway line
and two major roads. Sections of the embankment and the buttresses of the canal
bridge remain evident and the former Bowmans Harbour refuse site now capped and
landscaped forms a dramatic backdrop. Within the programme this was viewed as
an important site where a work of considerable scale could be implemented announcing
the approach to Wednesfield from Wolverhampton.
Commission:
Richard, a Powys based artist,
has a natural affinity with landscape and uses natural materials such as stone
or rough cut timber to reveal opportunities for a fresh experience of a familiar
place. His work for this site has been constructed in stainless steel and dramatically
reflects the sky and the location, and appears to span the canal like a rainbow.
The landscaping has been shaped to reflect and enhance this form
