Title:
Wednesfield High School
Date:
Artist:
Jonathan Ford
Location:
Wednesfield High School, Wolverhampton
Background:
Wolverhampton City Council has
adopted guidelines for a “Percent for Art” policy so at least one
percent of the budgets of major projects should be allocated to the commissioning
of integrated artworks. CBAT was asked to set up a project with the comprehensive
school, after an initial presentation by Jonathan Ford had raised their enthusiasm
for his work and approach. The involvement of the local community
was essential to the success of the programme of works and extensive consultation
via exhibitions and workshops was part of the process.
Commission:
Jonathan, based in Coventry,
worked over an extended period with a group of A-Level students and created
a work consisting of three periscopes placed at the perimeter of the school
grounds. One of these looks forward, one looks backwards towards the school
and one just reflects the eyes of the viewer. The views are symbolic of looking
to the future, to the past and into oneself. The periscopes appear to be connected
to the school by a series of cables and following the warning signs will lead
you to a series of lockers. Each locker contains a picture of one of the children
to suggest further information is contained inside.
