Water Towers (Redesign)
Date:
2005
Artist:
Hiscott and Pearl
Location:
Callaghan Square, Cardiff Bay.
Background:
"Some years ago I made a journey to Bardsey Island, crossing from the mainland in a small boat. The iridescently cavorting waves hypnotized me and made indelible drawings of light in my minds eye. My memory tweaked. Once again I was a tiny child, sailing with my father in our dinghy; no duties but to sit and stare through the spray and dream. I made a painting based upon this experience, mixing watercolour and conte, scratching through the thick paper to uncover the rhythmic elemental energy of the sea.
Later we realised that the painting had a huge potential and pertinence for the new sculpture ideas we were developing for the towers of the water sculpture, standing where they do, as a gateway to Cardiff Bay."
Commission:
The idea is to realise the expressive spluttering lines of light, of the painting, as staccato apertures in a ravishing reflective turquoise-blue aluminium. Working in the same panel size as the glass sculpture we intend to clad the existing structure with rolled sheets of blue anodized aluminium. A particular grade of aluminium, J57S, sourced from Germany is to be used. This particular grade of aluminium is the only material acceptable for a perfect colour and finish. The 2.5 metre panels will be laser cut, using a program which follows precisely the contours of the image. The metal panels will be individually hand rolled and pressed by Alan Dawson Associates in Cumbria. The method required to roll the cut-out sheets allows only about 2 days to be formed. The cut and rolled panels will be sent to a specialist architectural anodiser to be coloured. The anodising is guaranteed externally for 25 years.
