Whilst contemporary Brynmawr may appear, in relation to neighbouring towns, less affected by the economic downturn experienced through the loss of heavy industry, it is nevertheless in urgent need of investment and improvement of its economic base and infrastructure. In order to assist this process, the Welsh Development Agency in partnership with Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, commissioned the urban design and landscape architecture practice Macgregor Smith and CBAT to develop an Urban Design Strategy and Masterplan. David Watson lives and works in Brighton and through his work he aims to achieve a physical and conceptual link between place, design and materials.

The appointed artist David Watson, is expected to be working closely alongside the Landscape Architects and develop works integral to the proposed environmental improvements. This could include surface treatments, railings (especially to Welfare Park), seating and viewing points.
