Title:
Turin (Porta Sud) Competition
Date:
2003
Artist:
John Aldus / Bruce Williams
Location:
Turin, Italy.
Background:
As part of a study into the
reorganization of the city and its infastructure systems the city wished to
define a series of places to locate new city doors or gateways and particularly
to represent the sites of the role of “new doors” of the city. Part
of this process involved a competition for a new public artwork at the ‘Porta
Sud’ or south door.
Commission:
CBAT commissioned two artists to create proposals for the competition, Bruce
Williamson and John Aldus. Their concepts both looked at the gyratory system
central to the ‘Porta Sud’ and created integrated works that referenced the city’s
3 rivers. The theme was water which the artists cleverly combined with a reference
to the city’s name.
