Location:
Callaghan Square, Cardiff.
Background:
In consultation with MEPC and
Nicholas Hare Architects, CBAT agreed a commission to be integrated in the colonnade
along the front of the building. The brief to artists requested a treatment of,
or sculptural intervention within the space, which would enhance the experience
of the occupiers and visitors to the building, as well as passing foot traffic. The
art works created a number of important benefits, including the Encouragement
of the growth of existing business and the establishment of new business initiatives.
Commission:
Dutch artist, Lilian Roosenboom
was appointed to develop the commission and proposed a dark floorscape to include
anthracite donated by Tower Colliery, cast in lit circular glass elements and
a network of bright lines in stainless steel, with a reflective lighting scheme
evoking water ripples.Lilian drew inspiration from the history of the adjacent
docklands area and its use as a port for the transportation of coal and combined
this with the notion of global transportation in the form of fibre optic networks
to transfer data to businesses and clients around the world. Fibre optics and
light emitting diode units were set inside the ‘Black Diamonds,’ evoking
the nearby harbour and movement of its water.
