Title:
Sails
Date:
2001
Artist:
Howard Bowcott
Location:
Penarth Marina, Vale of Glamorgan.
Background:
Penarth Haven is situated on
the western flank of the Cardiff Bay regeneration area. It is bordered
by the mouth of the River Ely on one side and the penarth escarpment on the other. The
Taywood Homes development consists of 130 units constructed in two phases. The
development includes areas of private and public open space, the latter consisting
of a river walkway and liked areas connecting the development with the adjoining
Plymouth Park.
Commission:
Howard Bowcott’s sculpture
consists of two 5metre high ‘sails’ made of hundreds of Welsh blue
slates stacked on a timber frame. The ‘sails’ sit facing
each other with a small gap between them. The sculpture sits next to
the waterfront, within an area of open space and acts as a focal point within
the housing complex. Picking up on the rich maritime and shipping history
of the area the piece unites the old use of the waterfront with the new and
the current use of Cardiff Bay for sailing and leisure activities.
