Quaystones

Artist:
Howard Bowcott
Location:
Cardiff Bay
Background:
“The establishment of green areas near the waterfront and of trees maturing to form natural vistas and walkways in this otherwise windswept spot is a very good thing,” said Sue Essex AM. “The landscape scheme here provides a wonderful space to be enjoyed by members of the public and working with artists in these partnerships must be encouraged. “ added Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, Presiding Officer.
“
Cardiff is well known for its green spaces. This will be another green heartbeat in an area of intense development,” said the artist, Howard Bowcott. “The use of the original dock stones shows how the historical legacy of the area can provide a new asset to be enjoyed by generations to come,” he said.
Commission:
Huge dock coping stones which
once formed the walls of the Bute West Dock are set to form a small amphitheatre
and a new meeting place for visitors to Cardiff Bay. The 22 stones, each weighing
almost two tons each, were excavated during construction work on the UCI cinema
complex, and now have a new lease of life through the work of North Wales artist,
Howard Bowcott, for the arts and regeneration organisation, CBAT.
