Title:
Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend.
Date:
1997
Artist:
David Pearl
Location:
Bridgend
Background:
To staff, visitors and patients
a journey through the hospital corridors should be a clear, enriching and positive
experience demonstrating awareness of physical and emotional needs. The general
approach will be to reduce the overall clutter of the exisitng street by removing
unnecessary surface features such as signage, crash rails etc introducing a simpler,
calmer backdrop. Intergrated arts features and a creative approach to the basic
components of the physical environment, such as lighting will be used to bring
texture, colour and light to the reception area. The rhythm and sequence of colour
and texture will be synchronised with the streets natural pattern
Commission:
A glazed screen, slightly
curved and suspended between floor and ceiling was erected in the reception
area. The screen is directly opposite the reception and masks a seating area
within the reception. It has sufficient integral strength to act as a backrest.
Also a row of etched glass slats run along one wall onto which sunken lights
shine. A poem runs across the slats. A sculptural water feature brightens up
a small internal courtyard
