Title:
Phoenix Trees
Date:
2004
Artist:
Steve Gelliot
Location:
Wednesfield Way, Wolverhampton.
Background:
The incidental works were required to provide focal points on the route
beyond the immediate vicinity of proposed major works. Steve Gelliot says,"The site has a very post- industrial feel to it, with major manufacturing plants related to metals in the area having closed down, although there is a good deal of small to medium sized business still around. The feeling is of potential energy, rather than bustle, with nature beginning to take back some of the sites, whilst new human activities have been born in others."
Commission:
Steve proposed a series of five “Phoenix Trees” carved in green oak, approximately four metres in height. Steve says of his work: “I was
taken with the recent history around the site, the use of fire and heat
in the local metal works, combined with recent fires, for example at the
furniture works and also with reference to local street names. The idea
of the phoenix rising from the flames seems appropriate to the aims
of regeneration and transformation.” Each tree branch carries wings
first carved in wood, and then cast in bronze
