Title:
Memorial to 614 Squadron
Date:
1996
Artist:
Ieuan Rees
Location:
Pengam Green, (former airfield)
beyond runway road
Background:
614 Squadron was formed in June
1937 at Cardiff(Pengam) Airport under the leadership of Squadron Leader (later
Air Commodore) Richard Cadman. The Squadron served with distinction during WW2
and was reformed post-war at RAF Llandow where it remained until all flying squadrons
of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force were disbanded in March 1957. The site of the
project is very near to the centre of the original air field.
Commission:
Ieuan Rees sculpted the large
piece of Blue Pennant Stone which he chose because the proposed site was quite
exposed to the elements and that particular type of stone is more hard wearing
than other types of stone. It tapers and bends towards the top giving it character
but has a good amount of space for the engraving.
