Artist:

Location:
Market Rasen, Lincolnhire
Background:
The multi-million pound Single
Regeneration Budget, Environmental Improvement scheme awarded for Market Rasen
includes the development of five new attractive gateway markers on the main roads
that lead into the town. In December 2001, CBAT The Arts & Regeneration Agency
were approached by Lincolnshire Development, on behalf of the market Rasen Development
Trust. Following interview, CBAT was asked to develop briefs for the project
and manage the artists’ selection process
Commission:
The largest of the 5 gateways
will be sited at the junction of Gainsborough Road and Gallamore Lane. As this
is the busiest of all the entrance roads, it will provide the main focus of
the scheme, and will see the artist create a unique and substantial work for
Market Rasen. The aim of this and all the artworks is to announce the
presence of the town. The work is to act as a marker and create an identity
for the town, raising the awareness of the town’s presence for tourists
travelling by car and encouraging them to enter, rather than by-pass the town.
Although this places a particular expectation on the work, it is understood
that the work will be an artwork, which raises awareness through its presence,
rather than acting as an advertising banner.
