Title:
Ginnels and Alleyways Project
Date:
2003
Artist:
Andrew Rowe
Location:
Ebbw Vale
Background:
Parnell, Mackie and Rowe, a
team of south Wales based artists were commissioned to develop a project that
would allow for a large number of the local Ebbw Vale community to participate
in arts based workshops with a focus on their immediate environment. Their brief
was also to explore and develop proposals for upgrading the alleyways and stairways
that formed the natural pedestrian routes into the town centre from the adjacent
residential communities
Commission:
Working with 11 participatory
artists, 15 community groups and a number of local individuals, a wealth of
material was created and exhibited within the town centre over Easter 2003.
The aim of the workshops was to enable participants to contribute to the artworks,
making a positive and long lasting contribution to the town’s regeneration,
celebrating the experience and talent to be found in the town’s residents.
Work produced by the community has formed the basis of the design proposal
by Parnell, Mackie and Rowe to public improvements at two stairways that run
from the lower commercial area of Bethcar Street to the upper residential areas
