Title:
Eastern Gateway
Date:
2002-2004
Artist:
Richard Harris
Location:
Brynmawr
Background:
The approach to the town centre
is from the east via the A465 Heads of the Valleys road. Traffic from the A465
enters the town via a large roundabout. The centre of the roundabout is sunk
and cut through by the river and a footpath, linking the town to the nearby Comprehensive
and onwards into the Brecon Beacons National Park. The commission at this location
is intended to mark the gateway into Brynmawr as much for the pedestrian road
users as for car traffic
Commission:
Richard Harris lives and works in Powys. His proposal is to open up the centre of the roundabout by removing soil from one side to reveal the water and footpath within, to the traffic using the A467 to the South. Mirror finished stainless steel will encircle the centre of the roundabout creating a line of brightness and movement set into the bank, reflecting the
passing traffic, the surrounding land and the movement of people along the path. It will also reflect light into the interior of the roundabout, while the pedestrian underpasses will be lit by pools of daylight through ‘Sunpipes’ from the surface and by artificial light carried through new, stainless steel railings running along the sides of the footpath
