Title:
St Paul’s Footbridge, Cwm
Date:
2005
Artist:
Andrew Rowe
Location:
Cwm
Background:
To provide a striking landmark on the approach to Ebbw Vale and set a benchmark for good design, the Welsh Development Agency commissioned through CBAT, South Wales artist Andrew Rowe to work with Capita Gwent Consultancy and Rowecord the contractors for the bridge. Andrew developed a design which responded to the
sloping geography of the site and appears to reach over from the lower levels of the town, to the school, crossing the railway and the road.
Commission:
The parameters for the design
were extremely tight and a certain amount of compromising was required, to
ensure that the structure could be manufactured and installed within the available
budget and would respond to the many regulations applicable. However the current
proposal is of a far higher standard than the customary bridges at other similar
locations.
