The artists brief was to design
a unified work to play a central role in the Mermaid Quay development, forming

the development. The work has created a narrative trail for visitors to
follow enticing people to visit different areas of the development. The artist
chosen for this commission was Brian Fell. Brian was the artist responsible for
the beautiful Merchant Seafarers War Memorial near the Pierhead Buidling at Cardiff
Bay, and All Hands, outside the WRU Headquaters on Customhouse Street. He
is metalworker and creates many of his pieces such as Cargoes, as well as furniture
out of metal.
Commission:
Brian worked on emerging themes from a poem he wrote, linking it with cargoes
which have been imported from around the world and exported from Cardiff via
the busy docks. He designed various relief pieces such as a monkey, an elephant,
firewood and coal placed around Mermaid Quay. There are 22 pieces in total including
a cast plaque of the poem. The Cargoes pieces are made of steel, which has then
been galvanised and varnished. The pieces are on plaques, which are fastened
to the buildings by nuts and bolts. 22 individual sculptures were mounted on
plaques & fastened to the buildings using nuts and bolts.
