Location:
Electricity sub station, Tyndall
Street, Cardiff
Background:
The regeneration of South Cardiff
gas placed higher demands on electricity supplies than in the past. To
satisfy this increase need for power, Cardiff Central sub-station had to be upgraded
and expanded. Rather than adopt a standard industrial building approach
for this highly visible site, a more creative solution was sought, and the client
involved an artist in the design for the new sub-station.
Commission:
SWALEC commissioned Cardiff-based
artist John Gingell, following a selection procedure, to transform the appearance
of the sub-station and provide a positive landmark for the area. Gingell
joined the design team, which included structural engineers and architects. The
work emphasises the power, importance and dynamic nature of this essential
utility. A final element, a thirty metre Light Tower, symbolising electric
energy, is planned but not yet built.
