John Gingell 1994-1996 John Gingell Electricity sub station, Tyndall Street, Cardiff The regeneration of South Cardiff gas placed higher demands on electricity supplies than in the past.  To satisfy this increase need for power, Cardiff Central sub-station had to be upgraded and expanded.  Rather than adopt a standard industrial building approach for this highly visible site, a more creative solution was sought, and the client involved an artist in the design for the new sub-station. SWALEC commissioned Cardiff-based artist John Gingell, following a selection procedure, to transform the appearance of the sub-station and provide a positive landmark for the area.  Gingell joined the design team, which included structural engineers and architects.  The work emphasises the power, importance and dynamic nature of this essential utility.  A final element, a thirty metre Light Tower, symbolising electric energy, is planned but not yet built.
