Title:
The Big Egg
Date:
2000
Artist:
Rachel Joynt
Location:
Rigarossa, Cardiff Bay
Background:
In 2000, developer Redrow Homes(South
Wales) joined forces with CBAT to commission a public art work at its luxury
development next to the Bute East Dock in Cardiff Bay's Atlantic Wharf area.
The integration of a public artwork in the landscaping and exterior design of
the scheme was a condition of the planning permission but also raised considerable
marketing potential for the housing developer to attract attention to their development.
Irish artist, Rachel Joynt, was appointed to open a selection process and developed
a proposal for The Big Egg.
Commission:
The bronze egg, painted a light colour using white, oche and specks of green,
is approximately 2Mx1.4M in size and is situated on the central open space at
the crossing of two paths. It appears to have left a shallow groove in its wake,
giving the piece a sense of suspended motion and tension. The planting of long
grasses around the work suggests a nest like environment. A constant source of
intrigue, the work sits perfectly within its environment and draws attention
from residents and passers by alike.
"The egg is a very powerful image associated with nurturing, regeneration, nature
and potential."
