Title:
Beaufort Sphere
Date:
2004
Artist:
Andy Hazell
Location:
Beaufort Street, Brynmawr.
Background:
Beaufort Street is the historical
shopping street and the traditional ‘main artery’ of Brynmawr and
is central to the Urban Design Strategy. Beaufort Street plays a key role in
the economic revival of the centre. Brynmawr is one of the UK’s highest
market towns and the project has been designed to capitalise on the windy conditions
that the town often experiences, as well as highlighting the link between the
street’s name and the Beaufort scale, which is used to measure wind speed. The
Beaufort Street Spheres are the first works in the ambitious Blaenau Gwent public
artworks programme.
Commission:
Hazell
from Powys was commissioned to build eight polycarbonate spheres, each one
metre in diameter. These are suspended across Beaufort Street, the main
road through Brynmawr town centre. Each sphere will have 360 LED lights built
in that will light up in sequence to give the illusion that the spheres are
rolling up the street. The speed of the LED light sequence is dependent
on the strength of the wind – the harder the wind is blowing, the faster
the sequence will be, thus making the spheres appear to be moving faster.
