Background:
Cardiff County Council joined
forces with construction company, Leadbitter, in 2003 to develop an eco-friendly
affordable housing scheme in Butetown, Cardiff, where housing had become difficult
to let or maintain. As well as integrating several eco-friendly features into
the new scheme, the contractors sourced most of the building materials from within
a 50 mile radius of the site.
Commission:
CBAT was appointed to commission
artist Ray Smith to facilitate the provision of public artwork within the scheme-a
planning condition of the new build. Ray Smith held an open evening with residents
and developed proposals for railings at the end of each of the 3 cul-de-sacs
that would reflect the link with the adjoining playing fields. Ray also held
workshops with each of the primary schools in the area and spent several afternoons
developing sports related images with the school children. Sixty of these images
will be made into bronze plaques that will be mounted on the boundary walls
throughout the site.
